This summer, Peace Islands Institute PA embarked on an extraordinary journey, taking an exclusive group of participants to Egypt and Uganda. This once-in-a-lifetime experience allowed our guests to immerse themselves in intercultural exchanges, interfaith experiences, city sightseeing, and rich cultural and historical explorations.
Egypt: A Journey Through Time
Our adventure began in Egypt, where participants marveled at the iconic pyramids and enjoyed camel rides through the desert. We visited the Egyptian Museum, the oldest archaeological museum in the Middle East, housing an extensive collection of ancient artifacts that tell the story of Egypt’s rich history.
Participants engaged in unique cultural workshops, including a visit to a traditional essential oil workshop and a papyrus paper workshop. These experiences provided a hands-on understanding of how these elements have shaped Egyptian culture and history.
Egypt’s ancient history was brought to life as we explored some of the oldest religious sites in Cairo. We visited the Ben Ezra Synagogue, one of the world’s oldest, and the Hanging Church, believed to be where the Holy Family stayed and drank from a well inside the church. The journey continued to the Ibn Tulun Mosque, the oldest mosque in Cairo, dating back to 879 CE, showcasing Egypt’s deep Islamic heritage.
A highlight of our trip was a serene Nile River boat tour. As we drifted along the longest river in Africa, participants had the chance to reflect on the historical and cultural significance of this magnificent waterway, which has sustained civilizations for millennia.
Heartfelt Connections in Uganda
Our journey was filled with impactful experiences. We attended a well-opening ceremony, which was particularly important for the village, as the local people have limited access to clean water. We also volunteered at Embrace Relief’s Qurbani meat distribution, helping to provide essential nourishment to those in need. Our visits to various orphanages were particularly memorable; we brought new clothes, shoes, meals, and sweet treats to the children. However, the most rewarding part was spending quality time with the kids, playing and sharing joyful moments. We are deeply grateful for these heartwarming experiences and the beautiful smiles we shared.
International trips offer a wonderful chance for those looking to broaden their horizons, experience diverse ways of life, and cultivate empathy in their hearts.
