The purpose of PII’s Academic Forums is to collaborate with universities to bring academicians together, in order to give their perspectives on a theme. The program is initiated by a dinner with attendees from the community, academicians, and local leaders and is highlighted as a workshop with mini-breakout sessions facilitated by subject matter experts who encourage thought and dialogue around the topic of the event.  The forums are intended to gather ideas that can be summarized into a message to turn talk into action.

Goals

Select theme topics that are meaningful and that bring attention to societal problems and issues but that impact our state of Pennsylvania or our local Philadelphia region.

Raise awareness of global and local challenges that impacts our local society, and recognize opportunities that lead to ideas and solutions to encourage academic research that leads to practical applications.

Utilize academic expertise in Social Sciences for active engagement in civil society by establishing a starting point for implementing solutions and future initiatives, such as conferences and publications.

Objectives

  • Provide a platform to academicians of various backgrounds for mutual collaboration and create a networking opportunity among academicians and community leaders.
  •
  • Benefit from the local and global perspectives of experts from academia on issues that affect the public and private sector. These include but are not limited to business and the economy, challenges in education such as secondary school student graduation and college entrance success rates, and youth violence within and outside of schools.
  •
  • Support the means that nurture positive influence on our young people – an important catalyst that can be used as a way to remedy the ills of our society.

Benefits

  • Participation and support from more than 200 academic faculty members from the social sciences discipline over the last five years has led to a broad network of relationships consisting of a vast body of knowledge and expertise which has proven to be invaluable.

  • PII’s ability to bring varying and innovative views by hosting scholar and other prominent speakers from the U.S. and around the world has culminated in the effective contribution and support for diversity, which PII believes is a crucial aspect of a good education.

  • This and other PII events often result in putting dialogue into practice with the onset of conferences, publications, international trips, community service, or other programs to sustain the energy toward implementing solutions that benefit our local society.

  • To measure success, PII strives to instill a sense of purpose and vigor into participants to do something about the topic of discussion. However, participants at the event are also entertained with the showcasing of art, music, and/or other cultural presentations, and are inspired by recognizing and honoring special days and individuals.
